PRESS RELEASE (9/21/2016)
Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25 Loano will host the “Chapter of the Knights of Adelasia - Gathering of Italian and European food and wine fraternities” promoted by the’Cultural and Recreational Association “Ancient Order of the Knights of Adelasia and Paladins of Traditions” under the auspices of the’Department of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the City of Loano.
For the occasion will come to Loano more than thirty Brotherhoods from France, Belgium, Portugal and Italy.
The fraternities, hosted at Loano 2, will engage the city Sunday, September 25 with a parade that will start from Italy Square at 10 a.m. and will go through the streets of the historic center and the waterfront. The procession will be opened by the Ambassadors Jazz Band. The Imperia marching band will give a touring concert performing songs that have made the history of jazz since the 1930s. Along with the traditional repertoire (Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Glen Miller, Dizzy Gillespie, George Gerswhin, Carlos Jobim, Stan Kenton, etc.) the Ambassadors Jazz Band will present songs with sounds closer to progressive trends in contemporary music.
Le Enogastronomic Brotherhoods are nonprofit associations that aim to promote certain local products mostly food and wine but also the traditions of the places they represent. They were born as a transformation of the ancient guilds of arts and crafts that since the Middle Ages met to discuss their production or trade problems and ended at the table with the products of their land. Today they are widespread throughout Europe. In France there are 1,300 and they are officially recognized and sponsored by the state, in Italy there are 300 and in Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland and Germany about 500.
In Liguria the Brotherhoods currently registered are eight: the Brotherhood of the Knights of Pesto, l’Archconfraternity of Chinotto, the Brotherhood of the Mesc-ciua, the Oak Circle, l’Academy of “Savona's Chinotto”, i Knights of the Golden Bunch, the Confraternity of Ormeasco and the’Ancient Order of the Knights of Adelasia.
Almost all the Brotherhoods hold annual so-called “Chapters” that is, meetings at which parades are held in traditional hoods, products from the home area are exchanged, themes and projects are shared, and a large and lavish lunch is enjoyed.
In Liguria, the most famous and well-attended chapter is the one organized by the Knights of Adelasia, which is a very active Alassio Confraternity, founded in 2011 as a champion of Ligurian traditions not only in food and wine. The Order has to its credit six annual chapters always held on the last weekend of September in which both Italian and foreign Confraternities participate in a big way. Framing the event this year will be Loano.
