PRESS RELEASE (31/07/2014)

Friday, August 1, a Loano, will continue the film festival “Different Sens-Abilities”, promoted by the’Department of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the City of Loano and organized by the I.So THeatre.

The subtitle “diversity as a value” introduces the theme developed by the film cycle on the big screen.

The screening, scheduled at 9:30 pm, in the’Summer Arena Prince's Garden, proposes a viewing of Tim Burton's film “Edward, Scissorhands.” (USA, 1990), a modern fable about the impossibility of seeing diversity as a chance to overcome the limits imposed by social conventions.

Plot: Peggy Boggs, a cosmetics representative looking for customers, goes to the sinister Gothic-style castle located on the edge of the residential center where she lives, and finds there a strange young man, pale and bewildered, who has shears instead of hands. The latter lives alone after the sudden death of his inventor-father, which occurred before he could apply his hands, and his imperfection causes him severe difficulties. Pitying him, Peggy takes him into her home to live with her family, consisting of her husband Bill, teenage son Kevin, and daughter Kim. The strange guest immediately arouses the curiosity of Peggy's gossipy friends, who despise him, morbidly attracted by his “diversity,” and enthusiastic about the admirable jobs Edward is capable of doing with his scissors: cutting trees and bushes into original shapes of human or animal creatures, shearing dogs, and making elegant hairstyles for the ladies. But the enthusiasm for novelty will turn to misunderstandings and accidents. Edward is the “different one,” the disturbing element in the usual daily routine of the community, and because of this, after the initial curiosity he causes upset, fear and reveals the intolerant nature of people.
