{:en}PRESS RELEASE (3/5/2017)

Saturday, May 6, Loano, the last event of the review “The springtime of books”, promoted by the bookstore Mondadori Book Store Loano under the auspices of the Municipality of Loano and included in the program The May of Books, a national campaign created with the aim of emphasizing the social value of reading in personal, cultural and civic growth.

At 5 p.m., in the library the writer Thomas Pistoia will present his novel “The legend of the burqa“ (2016, Ophelia Publishing).

The story is set in a Middle Eastern country ravaged by endless war, corrupt, prey to traffickers and foreign invaders. Against this backdrop, two women decide to dedicate their lives to the fight for democracy and freedom, in defense of the people, against the Taliban, but also against foreign occupiers.

They fight the same battles, but with different weapons. They are joined by a mysterious and deadly character: some hail him as a liberator, while others call him a terrorist. Some say he is just a legend. The only thing that is really certain is that meeting The Burqa is like meeting death itself. Inspired by the true story of Afghan activist Malalai Joya, what seems to be a story of fantasy and adventure instead invokes an ever-present and painful actuality, lowering the characters into the narrative of real-life events.

The public speeches reported in the story are the same ones delivered by Malalai Joya in reality on several occasions.
