Among the almost gothic alleys of Genoa, aboard the legendary ocean liner Rex, to Trieste, Giulio Massobrio recounts a lightning-fast treasure hunt, a thriller in which honor, art, archaeology, love, and death challenge each other with no holds barred.
Here's the story: 1938. Nancy, a charming young American archaeologist and art hunter, uncovers an ancient scroll from the Roman era that draws a labyrinth of underground caves. The Nazis, too, are looking for the scroll, which absolutely must not fall into the hands of the Allies: astute and fanatical secret agent Hans Keller stationed in Genoa is tasked with retrieving it and killing anyone who knows of its existence. Nancy, fearing that the parchment might be stolen from her, has a copy made, so aboard the ocean liner Rex she sets sail from Genoa for the United States. On the Rex, in a place where it would never occur to anyone to look for it, she hides the original parchment. Hans Keller therefore seizes the copy, not suspecting the trick devised by Nancy. 1944. The Nazis discover Nancy's ruse and begin a frantic hunt that attracts the attention of the Allies, who assign Martin Davies, a secret agent and art historian of English father and Italian mother, to follow Nancy's trail and figure out where the map is hidden. Nazi Hans Keller must avoid the same mistake he made six years earlier and get possession of the parchment for good.
