Saturday, March 8 and Sunday, March 9, a Loano, in the Guzzetti Sports Hall will take place the third Evidence Inter-Regional Under 14 Liguria-Piedmont Fencing, organized by the Savona Fencing Circle, in collaboration with the Liguria Regional Committee and under the auspices of the’Department of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the City of Loano.
Third and final inter-regional under-14 fencing test, the competition precedes the National Championship to be held in Riccione in early May. The previous two trials had seen Liguria associated with Tuscany and were held in Lucca and La Spezia.
Divided into 18 competitions, more than 350 fencers in the following categories will compete in the three classic weapons of Olympic fencing - foil, epee and saber:
- 10 years old: boys and girls
- 11 years old: very young and very young
- 12-13 years old: boys/students and girls/pupils
The organization of the race was entrusted to the Savona Fencing Circle, one of the historical societies of Liguria, from the Liguria Regional Committee. The Savona Circle, founded in 1956, has already celebrated its golden anniversary in 2006 and is approaching the ripe old age of 60, which it will reach in 2016. The father of fencing in Savona is George Faldini (1912-2000), world foil champion in 1937, national federal adviser from 1960 to 1972 and member of the International Fencing Federation from 1960 to 1972. His son Roberto serves as president of the Savona-based association, which operates and spreads awareness of this noble sport in the Palascherma (named after Giorgio Faldini).
The fencing masters and instructors of the society are currently Federico and Fabrizio Santoro and Paolo Bracco. The society has about 70 fencers and about 30 kendoki (devotees of oriental fencing).
It has organized regional, inter-regional, national and international competitions in the past. Some of its athletes have received convocations to the Italian national youth, military and absolute national teams. The Palascherma Giorgio Faldini is a Federal Epee Training Center and has hosted concentrations of athletes from Liguria and Piedmont- In the past it has hosted collegial training of the national absolute and under-20 national teams.
In kendo and iaido, numerous athletes have distinguished themselves in national and international competitions. Carlo Sappino, a kendo master, has worn the blue jersey
