Declared a World Cultural Heritage Site (Sept. 30, 2009), the Argentine Tango was awarded because it «personifies both cultural diversity and dialogue. It represents the essence of a community and therefore deserves to be safeguarded.».
The seduction dance dates back to the early twentieth century when European immigrants including Italians, Germans, and Spaniards arrived on the banks of the Rio de la Plata, mixing their cultures with those of local people and communities of African descent arriving from Central America. The music and dance are the result of a mixture of rhythms and melodies with a strong nostalgic and sentimental component. Tango's signature instrument is the Bandoneon, an instrument that German emigrants brought in the early 20th century to Argentina, where it met with great success and was soon incorporated into the context of local music.
