Synopsis
Genoa, winter 1992. As celebrations for the five-hundredth anniversary of the discovery of America reshape the waterfront, the murder of young Luca turns the lives of a group of inseparable friends upside down, unraveling passions and secrets guarded for years. When suspicion falls on Teresa, the red-haired dreamer who loves novels, the case now seems closed, but overturning the truth of convenience will be the work of an exceptional couple: Diego Ingravallo, a police commissioner with a cumbersome literary surname, and psychologist Paolo Luzi, on whom a tragic past has bestowed the gift-or curse-of recognizing the lies of those who lie knowing they are lying. From the offices of powerful lawyers to the salons of wealthy Genoa to the melancholy neighborhoods of the working-class city, the two investigators sink into an abyss of fears and obsessions. Amidst the besieged caruggi of the darkness, the great cold is what invades hearts to the point of cracking every certainty, save one: never underestimate the consequences of love.
Bruno Morchio was born in 1954 in Genoa, where he lives and works as a psychologist and psychotherapist. vHe has published articles in journals on literature, psychology and psychoanalysis. His novel The scent of lies was 2013 Bancarella Selection Prize. He is the author of ten other books featuring private investigator Bacci Pagano. They have appeared in Garzanti editions: With death there is no dealing, The things I haven't told you, Bittersweet, Tail shots, The scarecrow, An open account with death.
