Saturday, March 1, at Loano, <\/b>on the occasion of the centenary of the shipwreck<\/b>, <\/b>in the Atlantic Ocean off Agadir, of the pole brig \u201cOur Lady of the Rosary\u201d<\/b>, the last great sailing ship of the Loano navy, will take place the initiative \u201cThe treasure that escaped the shipwreck.\u201d<\/b>, organized by the\u2019Dopodomani Onlus Association <\/b>under the auspices of the\u2019Department of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the City of Loano.<\/b><\/p>\n
The commemoration will open at 3 p.m.<\/b>, on the Kursaal Pier<\/b> with the laying by Cmdr. Italo Elice (the highest-ranking seafarer among the descendants of the departed crew) of a memorial wreath in front of the monument to the fallen of the sea. This will be followed by the presentation of the book \u201cThe Last Journey of Our Lady\u201d by Giorgio Genta.<\/b>, which will take place at 4 p.m.<\/b> in the\u2019Oratorio delle Cappe Turchine.<\/b><\/p>\n
Giorgio Genta, grandson of the commander who perished with the entire crew in the shipwreck, has unearthed historical material of considerable interest, a small treasure trove that chronicles an era through the life of the commander of the wrecked sailing ship: family relationships, country, industry, politics and major historical events of the twentieth century.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe discovery of hundreds of letters, diaries, photos, personal and shipboard documents, notes, minutes, articles from period newspapers, publications in Italian and English, and documents of affection and custom,\" explains George Genta<\/b> - prompted us to organize a moment of reflection on the event and the historical period, with the involvement of the Prof. Fabio Caffarena,<\/b> professor of Contemporary History at the University of Genoa and director of the Ligurian Archive of Popular Writing, a passionate devotee and scholar of twentieth-century documents, who will participate in the book presentation.\u201d<\/p>\n
