Questa manifestazione storica non è solo un momento di festa e divertimento, ma un profondo custode delle cultural traditions and a significant resource for the tourism of the territory.
Maschere e tradizioni: l’anima storica del CarnevaLöa
La ricchezza del CarnevaLöa affonda le radici in una storia centennial, also evidenced by the recognition of “carnevale storico” obtained from the Ministry of Culture. At the center of the event are his iconic figures, an integral part of the Italian mask registry and co-founders of the National Coordination Center of Italian Masks:
- Beciancin: la maschera ufficiale, simbolo goliardico dei primi del ‘900.
- Puè Pepin: the King of Loano Carnival since 1950.
- Captain Fracassa: Ligurian mask of the Commedia dell’Arte.
- Princess Doria of the Castle.
Queste figure, insieme a tante altre maschere ospiti da regioni come Piemonte, Lombardia ed Emilia, animano l’attesa cerimonia della “consegna delle chiavi” della città, inaugurando ufficialmente il periodo carnevalesco.
L’arte dei carri allegorici: maestria e satira
Il clou dell’evento è costituito dalle grandiose parades of floats On Loano's waterfront. These real opere d’arte in cartapesta are handmade by the “maestri cartapestai”, che tramandano una sapienza artigianale antica, spesso ispirandosi a temi di attualità, satira e cartoons.
Parades are not just parades, but moments of competition and gathering:
- Village Palio: sees floats made by the villages of Loano parade and compete.
- Palio of the Commons: una sfilata conclusiva che coinvolge i carri provenienti dai Comuni rivieraschi e dell’entroterra ligure.
Questa attenzione alla manualità e alla trasmissione del sapere è confermata dalla presenza della “Scuola della cartapesta e dell’arte carnevalesca”, which also involves the younger generation, such as high school students, in educational internship projects.

L’organizzazione, curata dall’associazione Old Loano con il contributo dell’Assessorato al Turismo del Municipality of Loano, guarantees a full calendar of events:
- Children's Carnival: pomeriggi dedicati ai più piccini con giochi, balli, animazione e merenda.
- CarnevaLöa Summer Edition: a summer revival of the magic of floats.
- Basüe Festival: parallel summer event reenacting the local history of witch hunts.
