Mountain Bike

The sound of the wheels, the smell of the forest, the wind on your face during a descent: mountain biking is an adventure between sports and nature and the territory of Loano offers several routes for those who enjoy two-wheeled experiences. The mild climate makes it possible to ride practically year-round, and there are dedicated services such as shuttle and bike service.

In particular, the Mount Carmo has joined the Final Outdoor Region, one of the most popular destinations for bikers around the world, with more than 250 trails through forests, rocky ridges and valleys.

Thanks to the collaboration between the City of Loano and the Finale Outdoor Region Consortium, four trails have been settled that are winning more and more fans: the Chestnut Trail, the Quarry, the Hamster and the Karma Trail, the latter already legendary for being the longest special stage in Final history during the’Enduro World Series 2017.

Each of these paths has unique features and different levels of difficulty, allowing riders to explore a new and lesser-known part of the Region, which right here at Loano finds a strong point.

Chestnut Trail

The route begins on Via Sant'Isidoro and continues along Via delle Vignasse, passing through Monte Carmelo and Borgo Castello, then climbing for about 5 km on asphalt toward the hinterland. After passing the hamlet Chiesa di Verzi, follow the sign for the Refuge, passing through Castagnabanca locality and the Cascina il Baffo area.

From the Chestnut parking lot the fast and fun descent begins, with passages through trees and undergrowth. The trail alternates between flowing sections and more challenging segments, including a Rock Garden characterized by rocks and technical passages. Then the trail connects to the final part of the Karma Trail, about 4.5 km that alternates between inclines, plateaus and artificial ramps.

Along the way we encounter Ulysses' Cave, with small waterfalls and pools of crystal-clear water, before continuing to Borgata Isola Superiore and Inferiore, passing Santa Libera with its panoramic view of Loano. The descent continues through the hamlets of Meceti and Mazzocchi until rejoining Via Aurelia.

Karma Trail

The Karma Trail is one of the most iconic trails in the Loano area and is about 9 km long, connecting the summit of Mount Carmo to the village of Verzi of Loano. It is a long, challenging and spectacular descent, suitable for experienced bikers who enjoy technical terrain.

The trail has a mostly rocky surface, alternating between flowing passages and more demanding sections, requiring bike mastery and good preparation.

Once in Verzi, the trail continues along the last part of the Castagna Trail, which runs alongside the Nimbalto stream. Here there are picturesque sections with rock passages and small wooden bridges, until reaching the center of the village.

Like all mountain trails, it requires care and preparation: while in the valley spring or summer conditions may seem ideal, at an altitude of 1,400 meters the weather can change rapidly, bringing rain, snow or fog. Relying on local guides remains the best way to experience the Karma Trail safely and discover the area without risk, fully enjoying spectacular scenery and a unique experience between sky and mountains.
