Varatella Valley Ethnographic Museum and Toirano Caves

Toirano is world famous for its 70 limestone caves, with extraordinary natural formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The complex of the Caves of Toirano is an archaeological site of international significance-an authentic journey through time to the Upper Paleolithic. Here are preserved footprints and traces left by the’Homo Sapiens, who frequented them about 14,000 years ago, and remains of the’Ursus spelaeus, the cave bear that found hibernation shelter there 50,000 years ago. Among the most striking environments is the famous Hall of Mysteries, which scholars believe may have been a ritual site for the initiation of young hunters.

In addition to their priceless archaeological value, the Caves are a spectacle of nature: rock concretions, unique in shape and color, create breathtaking scenery.

The complex, with a small paleontological museum at the ticket office, is open daily (except December 25 and January 1). Guided tours last about 70 minutes-a unique opportunity to discover and better understand the roots of our history.

Also not to be missed is the Varatella Valley Ethnographic Museum, hosted in Palazzo D'Aste-Del Carretto, which chronicles the life and traditional crafts of inland villages. The exhibit features objects of daily life and traditional agricultural activities, while the main floor preserves original furnishings and rooms of the palace.

Caves and Museum are easily accessible from Loano by car or by the TPL bus.

The Caves are open daily, from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Tours are guided and limited in number. Reservations are required and are made by phone only. For organizational reasons, email reservations are not accepted.
